Working with Stone Circles

One of the legacies we have inherited from our ancestors are the stone circles and sacred spaces. These can be the stone circles of Avebury and Orkney, or they can be the stone medicine wheels in Wyoming, or the mounds in Wisconsin… All of these ancient places need respect and care. Most of the tribal sites in the USA are tended by the tribes, but the stone circles in Europe, although supposedly under the care of the National Trust, are in reality uncared for, both in a structural sense and a spiritual sense.

Some people read Mists of Avalon and then fly to England to bury their special crystal on Glastonbury Tor. They forget that the stone they carry is from another land and is probably not compatible with the Tor, nor do they realize that most crystals are blasted out of the earth with dynamite, and finally, those crystals are supposed to be underground in their own land, doing what they are supposed to do. And thousands of people come to Glastonbury each year…. That’s a lot of foreign crystals for the land to cope with.

There are other ways to work with these sacred sites. Some sites just want you to be still, silent and pray there. Some sites want you to mediate for them and others are itching to work. It is up to you as a priest or priestess to figure out which is appropriate, and that is something that comes with practice, trial and error. Often it is appropriate to leave a gift of food at a sacred site as an offering. Make sure it is something that will not harm the animals and birds. I despair sometimes at people who are well meaning but really just don’t think, or they plainly just don’t know what they are doing.

I was looking through a book recently that talked about nature, faeries etc. It was written by a well-respected author on faery/earth matters. He suggested leaving gifts such as chocolate outside for the faeries. I slapped my forehead when I read that. Chocolate is a food of the GODS, given to deities in times past and used as a ceremonial substance. It is not a food for animals, birds, or faeries. It KILLS animals and birds and as such is considered poison to faeries. The power of chocolate, alcohol & coffee is something that deities can use and process into power. The tiny liver of a small animal cannot process chocolate. A bar of chocolate can kill a dog.

Suitable foods for faeries are fruits, grains, berries, nuts, seeds, vegan cakes, veggies, honey, molasses. No meat, no eggs, no coffee and no chocolate.

In the book, Stories from the Strange Side is a story based around the sacred stones at Beigh Moor, near Cooks Town, Northern Island. The story gives you insight into how these stone circles work and what they do. If you wish to work with stone circles, I suggest you build up a vision based on the details of the activation of the stones in the story and work with it.

If you are in the USA, there are many stone circles and sacred sites. Not all of them work the same way. But if you are nosy (like me), have good intent and are willing to take the time to be still and listen, the site will tell you how it works, it will show you. You just need to keep working, listening and experimenting. You will find some sites that are sleeping; they will either not answer you or they will tell you to go away. Respect their wishes.

I will, when I get chance, write a vision to help people access the stones.
