When I lived over the temple of Sul (later known as Sulis Minerva) in Bath, I used to go to the temple in vision often to interact with the priestesses there and learn from them. They taught me much about prophecy, healing, cursing and the binding of spirit. One of the things that used to really capture me was the use of steam. The hot baths were full of steam in a low cave, and in the ancient days the priestess who was the oracle would walk out on to the hot waters on a narrow stone ledge that was just below the water. She would stand in the midst of the steam and would relate prophecies to the kings and emperors. She would appear as though floating on the water, her voice emerging out of the dark hot steamy fog. Very impressive.
The theatrical staging did nothing to undermine the fact that the prophecies were powerful, accurate and terrifying. The priestesses often worked with snakes, a symbol of the double tongue, the ability to speak two realities; this one and the future one. This image is repeated around the world, surfacing for example, in the Minoan civilization.
The vision of the Oracle is one that we can use not only to ask advice on major future events; it is not to be used for trivial fortunes. The Oracle is also used to help us gain insight into our life’s journey, for inner development. The Oracle, when approached in vision, will sometimes be very blunt about what is to happen. Other times, it is hard to hear but something is blown up your nostrils, or you are slapped. It is not that you have upset them; they are placing the knowledge deep within you for it to emerge slowly over time. So you will be in a certain powerful situation and you will ‘know’ the situation from deep inside and know how to deal with it. Or you will have skills that you really don’t know where they came from. The physical impact can also trigger the sight within you if that is appropriate.
If you use the vision of the Oracle, be careful and be respectful. These are powers that have walked on our Earth and been in life in their own time. They are now deep within the inner worlds and operate much as they did thousands of years ago in the outside world. Their rules will still be the same; take a gift or offering, be respectful and don’t push them for information. They will tell you what they think you should know. If you wish to learn from them, go often and heed their teachings closely. If they ask you to do something, think carefully before accepting the task, and if you accept the task ensure that you complete it properly. But if they ask you to stop something in your life, it is probably for good reason. I gained my long-term health back by listening to contacts who asked me to stop eating certain foods.
VISION OF THE ORACLE OF THE GODDESS SUL
Light a candle flame and close your eyes. With your inner vision, see the candle flame burning before you. As you watch, the flame grows bigger and bigger until it is a column of fire before you. You step into the flame and bathe in its purity. Through the flames you can see shadows moving, and slowly, you step out, finding yourself in a low stone room with stone seats on either side of you. Before you is a heavy drape covering an entrance and steam is seeping around the drape, creating a dreamy image.
You hear your name called and you pull the drape to one side. A priestess takes your arm and leads you through the semi-darkness and steamy fog to the edge of a pool of hot water. The room you are in is a stone room fashioned out of a natural cave with a domed roof and circular walls. The priestess withdraws from you and you are quite alone.
A chanting begins and the deep resonant sounds vibrate through you and you begin to feel a shift in your perception. At that moment a glowing light appears to be emerging out of the mist and as you strain to look, the image of a hooded figure drifts out of the steam and seems to hover over the hot springs. The figure glows with an unearthly light and slowly, heavily-tattooed arms reach up and push back the hood. The face of a woman with long red hair and a heavily blue patterned skin looks past you to the wall
beyond.
She begins to talk in a strange tongue, the words coming thick and fast. Still she looks beyond you as if watching someone or something behind you. The words take on a musical sound and you begin to lose yourself in its beauty. Suddenly the figure stops her talking and looks directly at you. She points at you and tells you something that you need to know.
As soon as the prophecy is over, she replaces her hood and vanishes back into the mist and steam, leaving you alone in the darkness and heat. A hand appears on your shoulder and you are guided back out of the room. You are led by a priestess to a courtyard where the hot springs emerge and bubble into a large bath. You are requested to strip and bathe in the healing waters. You swim in the large bath and feel many things washing off of you, leaving you fresh and clean.
Climbing out, you are wrapped in a cloak of fine blue fabric and laid to rest on a pallet of soft herbs and feathers. Your arm falls to one side and as you lazily look at your arm, you see a sigil that has been tattooed therethe mark of Sul.
As you prepare to leave, you reach into your pocket and whatever is in your hand you place in a large bronze dish that is nearly full of treasures. If it is something you own in your life, you vow to take it to a place where hot springs emerge in the land and you bury it there or place it in the springs.
Before you, by the bronze dish, is a small fire. You look at the fire intently and find yourself drawn to the flames. Without thought you step through the flames to find yourself back where you first started. You whisper thanks to the oracle and gently blow out the candle.
